It’s been almost a year since Colombia was eliminated by Argentina in the Copa América and fans can’t forget that night’s controversial series of penalties. Especially since the Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martínez was involved in a singular controversy with Yerry Mina, Miguel Ángel Borja and the rest of the tricolor squad for the conversations he had before the charges.
The controversy
The July 2021 match ended 1-1, but the Colombian team lost 3-2 on penalties thanks to saves by Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
In addition to the comments about the goalkeeper’s saves to the penalties of the Colombians, One of her performances went viral and was heavily criticized on social media.
The moment was experienced when Yerry Mina charged the third penalty for the Colombians, which Martínez managed to cover. After saving the penalty from the player born in Guachené, the goalkeeper made a controversial gesture of celebration.

But before that controversial moment, just as Mina was approaching the point of taking penalties, some comments from the goalkeeper were heard in a tone of provocation towards the player.
It could be heard at that time that Martínez told the Colombian: “Are you nervous, huh? You’re nervous. Look how I eat you…”.
Well, in the last few hours Dibu Martínez explained the reasons for his “anger” with Mina. And, to the surprise of many, the controversy had begun weeks before the game in question.

‘I had not liked what Mina did’
Asked about what happened with the Colombian center-back, during an event in Argentina, Martínez comments from the outset: “When Yerry Mina hit me in Colombia and I was a little weak, in my second game with the National Team… (sic) and it was something I had in mind”.
Then, unexpectedly, he pauses and picks up another topic. But what he is referring to is a clash he had with the defender in June 2021 during the 2-2 draw between Colombia and Argentina in the World Cup qualifiers. Then comes his confession:
“(In the Copa América) In the previous game against Uruguay, Mina scored a goal against Fernando Muslera and started dancing. I know Muslera and I didn’t like what Mina did. So once I saved the penalty all those memories came back and well… you know the celebration“Martínez commented with laughter and to the applause of his people.

“AGAINST URUGUAY I HAD SCORED A GOAL AGAINST MUSLERA AND DANCED. I DIDN’T LIKE IT. WHEN I CUT THE PENALTY AGAINST HIM… THE CELEBRATION CAME” declared Dibu Martínez when recalling his episode with Yerry Mina. pic.twitter.com/xL82ako6Vb

Regarding what happened later, Martínez had told the newspaper ‘Olé’: “The celebration was more because of what I went through during my professional career, that I unloaded at the celebration, but it was nothing personal. I wrote to Yerry Mina that I apologized, that the truth was nothing personal and that talking was something to make me strong“.
