The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Dias Toffoli underwent surgery this Saturday, 20th, to remove two hernias. The judge was admitted to the Vila Nova Star hospital, in the south of São Paulo. According to the medical report, he underwent robotic surgery to correct a direct inguinal hernia and an umbilical hernia. The procedure was successful and the minister remains under observation. There is no forecast for an increase yet.
An inguinal hernia is a bulge that occurs in the groin area, usually when the intestine pushes against the abdominal wall. Likewise, an umbilical hernia occurs in the navel area and is also usually caused by the “escape” of part of the intestine. Toffoli had previously been hospitalized to have a hernia removed, in 2022. At the time, the problem occurred in the esophagus.
In 2020, Toffoli was hospitalized for drainage of an abscess. At the time, he had to remain in hospital due to suspected Covid-19 contamination, but subsequent tests ruled out an infection with the disease. In May 2023, the minister had to be hospitalized after testing positive for the coronavirus.
The minister is treated by doctors Antônio Luiz de Vasconcellos Macedo, Ludhmilla Hajjar and Pedro Loretti.
