Serial killers acquired wicked rock star status. The twisted fascination with them was renewed by productions such as “The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”, “Hannibal”, “Mindhunter” and “True Detective”. However, only “Dexter” would have exposed reasons to glorify and shield the slaughter of one of these predators of men.
The protagonist Dexter Morgan is a kind Miami coroner, brother and boyfriend extraordinaire, but he has a dark secret: he is a psychopath who likes to hunt, kill, dismember criminals and keep their blood samples as trophies. He was nicknamed as the ‘Butcher of the Bay’, although no one knows his face, only his mask.
It is a complex and atypical character, whom we know like no other in fiction thanks to his continuous introspection and voiceover that gives us front row seats to his most peculiar thoughts, such as this one:
“There is something strange and funny when you arrive at a crime scene in Miami in broad daylight, it seems to be set up like a horror movie set, as if it were a new section of Disneyland… Murderland…”, he comments to himself and excited. having found a new victim.
These criminals, turned into prey, serve to satisfy their psychopathic sadistic tendencies. He doesn’t eliminate them out of a sense of justice or morality, but to channel their darkness and do good according to his father’s teachings. Not for nothing is he considered an antihero and the most diabolical on TV.
As a whole, the series manages to congenial drama, comedy and action. His charisma captivates us despite Dexter’s inherent darkness. It is not a story focused on crimes – although they are not lacking either – like CSI. This is a different and unique look, courtesy of the protagonist, that explores dilemmas beyond his premise.
