The first automated S-Bahn lines are running in Hamburg. With the digital trains, Deutsche Bahn wants to improve speed.
Düsseldorf / Hamburg – Deutsche Bahn, together with Siemens, developed the world’s first trains that run all by themselves – and are now using them in Hamburg. The S-Bahn line 21 is on the approximately 23-kilometer route between the Stations Berliner Tor and Bergedorf / Aumühle en route and is driven remotely. The technology is still monitored by a train driver on the train, but the railroad maneuvers without intervention.

Because while the premiere run was carried out on October 11, the four automated trains will now run until October 15. Then the digital S-Bahn will be used according to the schedule. According to Deutsche Bahn, the train can not only keep to the timetable more precisely and improve punctuality, the digital trains should also be able to transport up to 30 percent more passengers.
