Los Angeles County is already seeing a jump in coronavirus cases with the PA5 sub-strain. Of the mutated omicron of the Corona virus, another worrying strain has also been detected locally, which is causing concern in India.
The strain “PA75-2-” is being monitored by the World Health Organization.
As of last Thursday, six cases had been detected in the United States, including two in California, with one of them in Los Angeles County, according to the county’s health director, Barbara Ferrer.
Ferrer said during a press briefing that it “appears to have additional mutations that facilitate spread and avoid immunity.”
It is “spreading fairly quickly across India,” she added.
Scientists are exploring whether the emergence of PA75-2- could eventually prolong or exacerbate the spread of the current wave, which is being fueled by PA5., which also belongs to the Omicron family and is highly contagious.
