According to the “Lloyd’s List” website, Iranian military personnel boarded the two tankers, and were later escorted by naval ships from international passages to Iranian waters, a few miles from the coast.
He explained that one of the two ships had a crew of 24 Greeks and Filipinos on board, and it was carrying an oil shipment to the United States. The second ship had 25 people on board.
He added that Iran’s seizure of two Greek-owned tankers and flagging down their flags came “in response to Greece’s arrest of an Iranian oil tanker off its coast.”
The Iranian Foreign Ministry had summoned, earlier, the Chargé d’Affairs at the Greek Embassy in Tehran to protest the move, describing it as a “clear act of hacking”.
Agence France-Presse revealed that Greece protested against “piracy” after Iran announced the seizure of the two oil tankers.
