State television reported that the Revolutionary Guards targeted “the headquarters of the anti-Iranian terrorists” in northern Iraq, referring to Kurdish rebel groups based there.
Tehran accuses Iran’s armed Kurdish opponents of being involved in the unrest in the country, particularly in the northwest where most of Iran’s 10 million Kurds live.
The demonstrations against the Iranian government began after the authorities announced on September 16 the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, from the Kurdistan Province (northwest), in unclear circumstances.
After 7 days of protests, mass demonstrations took place in support of the government.
The Iranian authorities confirmed the deaths during what they described as popular unrest due to Amini’s death, but ruled out any responsibility for the security forces for this, saying that the killing of the protesters was “suspicious.”
