FC Groningen has pushed Willem II even deeper into the relegation worries. Danny Buijs’s team recorded a 1-0 victory and as a result again distanced itself from the relegation zone in the Eredivisie.
It was precisely youth product Bjorn Meijer who exploded the FC Groningen stadium for the first time after the corona measures were released. The eighteen-year-old left back opened the score with his head after thirteen minutes, on the advice of Bart van Hintum. That was a first for Meijer: it was his first goal as a professional football player.
He thus initiated the victory of the much stronger Groningen early on, which also had enough opportunities to double the score after Meijer’s goal. Willem II, on the other hand, hardly appeared in the game. Exemplary was the fact that the Tilburgers shot on goal zero times. Even a final offensive could not change that. The away team’s biggest chance was for Driess Saddiki. He shot a few centimeters past the wrong side of the post in the final phase.
As a result, Willem II again failed to escape from the lower regions of the Eredivisie. Fred Grim’s team occupies the disappointing fifteenth place. FC Groningen has place ten more firmly in their hands due to the victory.
