After a weak start, the German women found their way into the game better and better – also because the British fail at the penalty corners. Only in the 1-0 lead did Jones transform one of the ten penalty corners awarded to the Olympic champion. After an increase in performance, Germany fought with heart and passion for an important success in the difficult group.
The captain of the German national hockey team, Nike Lorenz, ran up with a rainbow band on her left sock. Lorenz had worn the colorful armband as a symbol of sexual diversity for months and recently in some games at the European Championships – and thus caused a sensation worldwide.
