Clashes erupted outside the stadium between the police and Marseille fans during the first 45 minutes of the first half. Tear gas was released during the riots.
On the forecourt of the Velodrome stadium all the protective barriers that are usually used to channel the crowd have been knocked to the ground. The police intervened on the square. Hundreds of people reportedly tried to force entry. During the push back maneuver, tear gas was used and a commissioner was injured by a bullet thrown in the face which required his transport to hospital. Also on the pitch a spectator made an intrusion to “pose” with Lionel Messi without aggression. But he interrupted a Parisian counterattack that could have been decisive and was quickly “kicked out” from security.
In the pre-match sequence, Olympique Marseille fans sent a message to the Professional Football League (LFP) before the start of the 0-0 French derby, with huge “LFP MERDA” cheering at the Stade Vélodrome. The banner, installed across the entire North Curve of the Vélodrome, was unveiled when the players entered the pitch. On the other side of the stadium, in the South Curve, a large number of smoke bombs were ignited. OM has already been sanctioned twice this season by the LFP disciplinary committee for grandstand incidents, first after the Nice-OM match on 22 August, then after the one played in Angers on 22 September.
From this match, the OM risks the penalty of one point in the standings in the event of a repeat offense. In the first half the match was briefly interrupted due to some bullets being thrown in the direction of a corner flag, where the Parisian Neymar was about to kick. The stadium speaker made an announcement over the microphone, warning that the match could be interrupted in the event of a reiteration of throws. Before the game, according to the police, a person was arrested for throwing two smoke bombs in the direction of the PSG bus, without reaching his goal.
On Friday, club president Pablo Longoria called for calm so that Sunday’s match would remain “a moment of football”.
