Steven Ho, from Hong Kong, met with the Chinese president on Thursday (June 30); situation raises alert in the government
Hong Kong MP Steven Ho was diagnosed with Covid-19 on Saturday (June 2, 2022), 2 days after meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping. The head of state went to the city to participate in the celebration of 25 years of the resumption of control over Hong Kong.
It was Jinping’s first public trip outside the Chinese mainland since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the Hong Kong newspaper The StandardHo was one of 100 people who had contact with the Chinese leader during the event on Thursday (June 30).
In one photo, he appears in a mask two rows behind the Chinese president. The deputy said he tested negative on the 1st day of the meeting.
On Friday (July 1st), he took another test and the result was inaccurate. “The July 1st sample had a very low infectivity and was categorized as ‘uncertain’, but for public safety reasons, I did not participate in the events that day”wrote in social networks.
The situation raises the alert in the Chinese government about the cases of covid-19. Ahead of Xi’s visit to Hong Kong, officials ramped up mass testing for coronavirus and quarantine protocols, as well as setting up a massive security apparatus by blocking roads and airspace around the port of Victoria.
lockdown
The increase in the number of Covid-19 cases has led to new restrictions on the population in China, posing a new threat to the country’s economic recovery.
Officials in Anhui Province reported nearly 300 new cases on Monday (4.July) and Sixian County announced lockdowns for 760,000 residents.
China adopts the so-called policy of “covid zero”which determines the isolation of all infected people and the tracing of close contacts.
The country’s most populous city, Shanghai, spent 2 months in lockdown, ended June 1. Still, officials have mandated that all residents in 15 of the 16 districts take a PCR test every week through the end of July.
The Chinese capital also faced strict disease control measures. On June 16, Beijing announced that it would finally have “defeated” to covid-19. Even with the improvement in the number of cases, the capital still adopts cautious control measures.
