Dentist Oles Shevchenko called the claim that chewing gum removes fillings a myth
There are many myths around chewing gum, including some people who believe that it is dangerous for dental fillings. Doctor of Medical Sciences, Chairman of the Professional Society of Dental Hygienists Oles Shevchenko dispelled three main misconceptions about chewing gum in a conversation with Lenta.ru.
According to the dentist, one of the most popular myths is that chewing gum removes fillings. “If the filling is installed correctly, chewing gum will not harm it. If the tooth restoration was performed poorly, the filling may be damaged by any mechanical impact, be it chewing gum or hard food. Chewing gum itself does not increase this risk,” the doctor said.
The doctor called the statement that chewing gum does not have any positive effect on the health of teeth and oral cavity untrue.
Chewing gum stimulates salivation, which helps clear your mouth of plaque and food debris and prevents the formation of tartar. Moreover, it has a positive effect on cognitive abilities and helps reduce stress and anxiety levels in humans.
Chewing gum is not only not harmful, but also beneficial both for dental and stomach health, and for psychological balance, the expert emphasized.

As the last myth, Shevchenko singled out the popular opinion about the dangers of chewing gum on an empty stomach. However, he said, according to research from King’s College London, chewing sugar-free gum helps neutralize the acidic environment that forms after eating fatty or spicy foods, leading to a reduction in the unpleasant burning sensation in the esophagus.
Earlier, dentist and implant surgeon Igor Blyumkin listed the reasons for the appearance of tartar. He named insufficient oral hygiene as the main one.
