Maxi outbreak of dengue in Fano (Pesaro-Urbino): there are 102 confirmed cases and 10 probable ones currently recorded in the area. The Marche Region communicated this in a note, adding that other cases are also being verified which have presented compatible symptoms in recent days. From today, the kit with 10 larvicides, a repellent spray and a disinfectant pen is being distributed in municipal pharmacies at the regulated price of 15 euros (800 available in total).
The situation and the alarm of the experts
“The situation – underlines the Region – is constantly monitored”. Today “an update meeting is planned with the ministry and the Higher Institute of Health, in which regional and territorial representatives will participate. Furthermore, on Thursday the Regional Operational Group for Health Emergencies (Gores), a technical group made up of experts from various disciplines who also deal with epidemic health events, who had already held a first meeting in recent days”.
“To prevent the disease, which is transmitted solely by mosquitoes – we remind you – all the required public health measures have been implemented. As indicated by the Ast Prevention Department, the Municipality of Fano has carried out disinfestation throughout the the urban area of Fano and an intervention has been launched to eliminate the larvae. Furthermore, an information campaign has been launched to raise awareness among the resident population on how to eliminate mosquitoes in gardens and private areas: stagnant water from vases and animal bowls must be eliminated. ; it is recommended to wear light-coloured long sleeves and trousers, use mosquito nets on the windows and use effective repellents. Some mosquito traps have been placed in the area, useful for defining the size of the population capable of transmitting the virus and any infectivity. The captured mosquitoes will be examined by the laboratory for vector-borne diseases of the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Umbria and Marche”.
Bassetti: “Native outbreak in Fano must be contained otherwise there is a risk of expansion”
“What appears to be an indigenous outbreak of Dengue is taking place in the Fano area and it is clear that with all the cases in our country it was to be expected and we had also foreseen it. After the outbreaks of 2023, here we are again caught with imported Dengue and which then spreads. Now we have to move on to vaccinations, because a possible recurrence can become important and then we have to do a painstaking job of monitoring the contacts of the cases because otherwise the outbreak will spread even further”. This is what Matteo Bassetti, director of infectious diseases at the S.Martino polyclinic hospital in Genoa, told Adnkronos Salute.
“The municipal administrations cannot be left alone in this disinfestation work against mosquitoes – he warns – a broader reasoning must be made with structural anti-mosquito interventions. In the meantime, this outbreak which has reached 102 infections must be addressed by containing it otherwise we risk an expansion on the territory and beyond. A scenario – concludes the infectious disease specialist – which would become even more difficult to manage”
Ciccozzi: “If the tiger mosquito becomes an effective vector, we should worry”
“The climate of September and October is helping the persistence of the tiger mosquito in the area. It makes me reflect that this mosquito, which is an occasional vector of Dengue, has brought many cases to Fano and if we are faced with all native infections there it is a significant problem. The three factors, mild climate, lack of disinfestation and the presence of many tiger mosquitoes, have probably allowed this Dengue outbreak of over 100 cases. At this point we must ask ourselves whether the tiger mosquito is becoming an effective vector of this tropical infectious disease, the concern from a health point of view could increase”. Thus epidemiologist Massimo Ciccozzi spoke to Adnkronos Salute.
