Brazilians achieved the highest rate of anxiety and depression among 11 countries analyzed in the WHO survey “Mental Health Among Adults During the Covid-19 Pandemic Lockdown”. In this context, phrases like “Work while they sleep” emerged as antidotes offered by coaches, but they became memes, or better, demotivational phrases. “Here comes the questioning of this requirement for positive functioning all the time. Life is made up of ups and downs,” says Paula Dione, a psychiatrist at Holiste Psychiatry.
The marketing director of the Brazilian Association of Coaching Professionals, Magnolia Abramo, believes that “many who claim to be coaching professionals, because of misinformation, think they are ready to deal with human nature, and this is not true.”
THE MEMES
The content producer Mila Costa rescued experiences to produce satirical work scenes. In one of the videos she shared on Instagram, she simulates unusual employee gifts in a fictional celebration. “Congratulations on your 10 years with the company! Mechanical pencil is for when you think you’ve run out of strength, you work harder and remember that you always have loads to put on”, she said.
Speaking in a satirical way about the romanticization of overwork is not to encourage pessimism and negativity, Mila argues, it is to find balance. “There’s that person who says: ‘It’s going to be all right.’ It depends, it may not work.”
Another member of the “demotivational” movement is Luiza Voll, a partner at the content and media platform Contente, who released an outburst on Instagram about the danger of unique narratives rehearsed by coaches: achievements accompanied by formulas or recipes, which, as side effects, affect long-term self-esteem. “We blame ourselves, we feel inferior”, he said in the post.
The need for identification was echoed in the pandemic, mainly because of the new notion of time, she says. “We saw a complete lack of contour, the start of work, lunchtime, a moment of rest, relationships. This little by little makes us sick.”
In effect, memes arise to generate a provocation that nothing is definitive. Information is from the newspaper The State of São Paulo.
