Decline in births, increase in immigration and data (with surprises) for 2023
Continues to be dramatic the situation regarding births in Italy. The numbers speak clearly and place us among the European countries most in crisis. But there is also one good news regarding the demographic trend of Italy, contrary to some estimates, in 2023 the resident population in Italy is decreased by only seven thousand people, or about one in every thousand. The bad news – based on Istat data and as reported by Linkiesta – is that it could be a provisional datadue to a sudden increase in immigration. The evidently more structural decline in births continues and, this is one of the recent news, accelerate especially in those areas that seemed to be partially saved.
In the province of Milanin fact, from a balance of +0.8 per thousand in 2009 it went to -2.2 in 2029 and to -3.3 in 2023. In that of Bergamo from +2.9 to -1.7 a -3.1. In Rome and its surroundings the difference between births and deaths, positive at 0.6 per thousand fifteen years ago, has turned negative to 2.8 ten years later and into one of a good -4.3 last year. The internal migration rate in the last decade – concludes Linkiesta – has gradually become more and more negative in the more internal southern provinces. Between 2019 and 2023 there were few new things. These include the net loss of inhabitants to the rest of Italy of Umbria he was born in Sieneseas well as the further worsening of the numbers in populous areas such as Neapolitan.
