UTo force booster vaccinations against the coronavirus, the acting Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) urges a federal-state meeting. “Current data from Israel show that boosting makes a crucial difference in breaking the fourth wave,” said Spahn of Bild am Sonntag. “Currently, the booster speed in Germany’s practices is not enough.” You need a summit from the federal and state governments.
The number of people vaccinated is only increasing slowly. A booster dose after six months to counteract the diminishing effects of the vaccine over time are much fewer people than could. In particular, risk groups are recommended to refresh their vaccination protection. Politicians are desperately looking for concepts to induce more people to do so. The health ministers’ conference will meet in Lindau from next Thursday.
Spahn had repeatedly advertised booster vaccinations in the past few days. In his opinion, the federal states should invite people over the age of 60, for whom this is recommended, in writing. The ministry also emphasized on Saturday that, in principle, all citizens are entitled to such a vaccination. It referred to the vaccination ordinance.
The World Health Organization has been criticizing booster vaccinations in rich countries for months, while many poorer countries are still waiting for vaccine doses. According to experts, vaccine doses could save most lives if they could benefit people who are at significant risk of developing serious illnesses and who are still unvaccinated.
Lauterbach: Vaccination centers needed again for refreshments
SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach spoke out in favor of reopening the vaccination centers. “Realistically” there are currently not many options “with great effect”, Lauterbach wrote on Twitter in view of the increasing number of corona cases. One of two possibilities is “a much faster booster vaccination,” he emphasized with a view to booster vaccinations. “For that you would have to reopen the vaccination centers.”
As another possibility, Lauterbach called “consistently use 2G” – that is, only admitting vaccinated or convalescent people to events or indoor restaurants. “That greatly reduces the number of cases,” emphasized the SPD health politician.
New corona infections are currently rising sharply again. As a result, concerns about renewed emergencies in hospitals are becoming increasingly louder.
The outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) supported the G20’s plan to vaccinate 40 percent of the world’s population against the corona virus by the end of the year and 70 percent by the middle of next year. “I support that,” she said on Saturday after discussions with the other heads of state and government of the leading industrialized and emerging countries in the Italian capital, Rome. Germany wants to pass on 100 million vaccine doses this year and another 75 million next year.
G 20 want to provide money against future pandemics
According to Merkel, the G-20 countries want to create a financing mechanism to prepare for possible future pandemics. It is about laying the foundations in order to be better prepared for later outbreaks of pandemics. There will also be a “financial facility” for this. It could be used to strengthen the World Health Organization (WHO).
