A powerful explosion in a restaurant in China, caused by a gas leak, on Wednesday killed at least seven people and caused serious damage in a residential area less than fifty kilometers from Beijing, according to official media.
The explosion occurred just before eight o'clock in the morning (midnight GMT) in a residential area in the city of Sanhe, located in a suburb of Beijing. A large number of Sanhe residents go to the capital for work every day.
State television CCTV reported that the explosion occurred “in an old residential neighborhood,” explaining that the presumed cause of the disaster was a gas leak in a fried chicken restaurant.
An updated toll this evening reported that seven people were killed and at least 27 others were injured, according to the New China News Agency (Xinhua). The previous toll was two dead and 26 wounded.
Footage posted on Chinese social media shows a very powerful explosion followed by thick smoke and flames above a busy road during rush hour.
In other pictures, a collapsed building and a number of destroyed cars appear.
