Rescuers rescued ten people trapped after Saturday’s eruption. The group worked at a sand mine. Survivors are being sought and roads blocked by rubble are being made accessible again.
At least eleven villages are covered with a layer of ash. Houses and a bridge were also damaged. Nine hundred evacuees have been housed in nearby mosques, schools and village houses. Residents are urgently advised to stay at least 5 kilometers away from the crater.
Panic
After the eruption, local residents fled en masse. Local TV images and social media show people running away in panic as an ash cloud approaches. The Ministry of Health has promised to send medical aid troops.
The Australian KNMI warns that ash can be ejected into the atmosphere up to 15,000 meters. This could have consequences for air traffic.
The more than 3600 meters high Semeru in East Java has erupted several times in the past year. Indonesia is located in the ‘ring of fire’, an area in the Pacific Ocean with almost 130 active volcanoes, where many earthquakes also occur.
