Dead Uusimaa: Pentti Karvonen, the former ME man of the obstacle course, has died

Pentti Karvonen died on Saturday in Porvoo at the age of 90.

Steeplechase former world record holder Pentti Karvonen is dead, he says Uusimaa magazine. Karvonen died on Saturday in Porvoo at the age of 90. Karvonen was born on August 15, 1931.

In his running career, Karvonen set two world records in the 3,000-meter hurdles. In 1955, he first ran an ME time of 8.47.8 in Helsinki and improved his time two weeks later to 8.45.4 in Oslo.

In the championships, Karvonen’s potential was not measured in the peak years, as the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne did not compete with him due to a stomach ulcer. At the 1960 Rome Olympics, he was eliminated in the early rounds.

After his active career, Karvonen worked for the Finnish Sports Federation, among others, as vice chairman. Karvonen was a watchmaker by profession.
