Dead | Ruggero Deodato is dead – the film director was known for a violent horror film, which was also banned in Finland

The director Ruggero Deodato fell asleep.

Italian film director Ruggero Deodato has died at the age of 83. The matter is reported in the Italian media and among others in The Guardian.

Deodato was known for his violent, gritty and sugary horror films, best of all for the 1980 film Burnt offerings of cannibals (Cannibal Holocaust).

The film is the so-called mockumentary i.e. a pseudo-documentary that tells about the disappearance of four documentarians investigating cannibalism in the South American jungle and the material found in their wake. The film contains, among other things, severe sexual violence, torture and genuine violent violence against animals.

The controversial horror film was banned soon after its premiere in Italy as well as in many other countries such as Finland.

The Guardian says that, for example, the film released on video in Britain in 1982 was banned in 1984 and released 17 years later with five minutes cut out. The film became available at that time, in 2001, also in Finland.

In 2011, a version was released that included other original footage except for the 15-second scene of the animal’s death.

After the premiere of the film, there were claims and suspicions that it would feature at least one real kill.

As a result, Deodato received murder charges, which were dropped when the allegedly killed Actors appeared in court. Deodato was convicted of animal cruelty, but it was later overturned.

Deodato was born on May 7, 1939 in Potenza.
