‘Ed, what’s your address? We’re coming to you now!’
It is 5 a.m. on Friday, February 26, when the heavily pregnant Kateryna from Bucha, a suburb of Kiev, sends a WhatsApp message to her good friend in Rotterdam. Bombs, shells and artillery fire in the streets of her hometown make her realize that the war has begun. She has to get out of there.
“I did not hesitate for a moment,” says Edwin Kemner (52) more than a week later in his apartment in Rotterdam-Feijenoord. “After I gave my address, I immediately cleaned up the bedrooms and went to sleep on the couch.”
