The World Economic Forum, held in Davos, praised the UAE’s handling of the novel coronavirus (Covid 19) pandemic, stressing that the peace agreement signed between the UAE and Israel in 2020, provides a great opportunity to increase technical progress in the medical field through cooperation between the two countries. The forum organized a session for a group of officials and experts, entitled “Abrahamic Agreements: An Unexplored Path to Health Innovation”, organized by VPS Healthcare Group, at its Burjeel House pavilion in Davos, Switzerland.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Foreign Trade of the UAE, Dr. Shamsheer Vayalel, Chairman and Managing Director of VPS Healthcare Group, and Itamar Rabinovitch, former Israeli Ambassador to the United States and former President of Tel Aviv University.
Al-Zyoudi stressed that the knowledge exchange between the two countries during the pandemic was the best example of bilateral cooperation.
He said, “There was a medical exchange between the two countries during the pandemic, and work was done to conduct research on the virus and vaccine, and the two countries took quick steps to deal with many developments, and we saw some tangible results that affect the control of the virus within the Emirates.”
He continued, “The volume of bilateral trade between the UAE and Israel increased to more than 2.5 billion US dollars in less than two years after the signing of the Abrahamic Agreement.”
The volume of transactions between the two countries exceeded one billion dollars in the first quarter of this year, and the two countries announced two years ago that they would allocate $3 billion for research and development in order to conduct more participation in the region.
Al-Zeyoudi added, “The UAE is absolutely keen to deal with and benefit from the strong healthcare sector in Israel.”
For his part, Rabinovitch noted the cooperation between the UAE and Israel in various fields, and said that concrete measures must be taken to maintain the momentum between the two countries.
He said: The UAE participated in a very important project, which is the production of water and electricity in Jordan, and the UAE plays an important role in this project.
He said, “The relationship started well and is proceeding to achieve its desired goals, and it is developing for the better thanks to the follow-up of the two countries’ leadership and their keenness on the success of this distinguished relationship.”
While Dr. Shamshir stressed that the healthcare sector is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the Abrahamic Agreement between the UAE and Israel, and this agreement is a fertile ground that has the ability to affect the entire region.
He said, “Health is one of the biggest bridges that can connect nations and peoples, and we have witnessed many bilateral moves between research companies and Israeli research institutions.”
“Big development can happen through some research collaborations, opportunities are growing because of the pool of capital in Abu Dhabi and research talent from Israel, and as a healthcare company we are very excited to be part of this relationship.”
Shamsmir continued, “I remember the speech of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, in which he stressed not to leave anyone living in the country suffering from a shortage of medicine or food. I think this was a good start.”
He added, “We were all enthusiastic about this commitment, and we were all part of that fight against the Corona pandemic (Covid-19), and the UAE has developed a new model for public-private partnership during the pandemic, and it has the ability to move around the world.”
According to Dr. Shamsheer, the Brahimi Agreement could culminate in the next Nobel Prize for the region as a result of the close relationship between the two countries.
