Dating app Tinder recently unveiled an international study titled “The Green Flags Study.” This survey involved 8,000 heterosexual men and women from four countries: United States of America, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. The findings reveal that men and women may have much more similar desires than they think. One of the key findings from the study is that a large majority of men (91%) and women (94%) believe that dating has become more difficult. Despite this, the search for a romantic relationship is still prevalent: 53% of men and 68% of women are looking for romance, indicating much more common interests than one might imagine. Another significant fact is that 65% of women believe that men only seek casual flings, while in reality only 29% of men have this goal.
During the pandemic, traditional meeting opportunities have been limited, and young people have felt the lack of real-world experiences. This has generated growing dissatisfaction and a feeling of disconnection among young people, leading to the question of whether the hyper-connectedness of the current generation is actually amplifying the sense of detachment. The “Green Flags Study” highlights how men and women tend to misunderstand each other based on stereotypes. Dr. Sara Konrath, a social psychologist at Indiana University, explains that these biases can damage relationships, suggesting that staying curious and asking questions can lead to deeper connections.
The study describes an “epidemic of assumptions” situation, where positive signals are often interpreted negatively. Both men and women are on the same page in terms of romantic goals, but they aren’t aware of it. Both genders draw conclusions based on inaccurate assumptions, creating narratives that do not reflect reality. The study then finds that the majority of men (78%) and women (84%) want an equal relationship. Another interesting aspect concerns progressive labels and values. For example, 37% of men don’t label themselves as feminists, while 50% of women would prefer to date someone who identifies as such. The study highlights that some traditional attentions are still highly appreciated. 59% of women appreciate their partner making sure they get home safely, 55% prefer to avoid using the phone during dates, and 50% appreciate sincere compliments.
