On Sunday, the Ukrainian authorities in the east of the country accused the Russians of bombing strategic infrastructure that caused power cuts in large areas, at a time when Kyiv launched a counter-attack through which it made breakthroughs in Russian lines.
Ukrainian media reported on Sunday evening that areas in many regions were without electricity. Politicians in the eastern Kharkiv region, from which Russian units recently withdrew, were among those who reported problems with electricity and water supplies.
Ihor Terekhov, mayor of the capital Kharkiv, which bears the same name, said on Telegram that “this is a despicable, hateful revenge on the part of the Russian aggressor for our army’s success.”
Similar reports came in the evening from the Sumy, Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Zaporizhia and Odessa regions.
On the other hand, sirens were heard across Ukraine of air strikes. Some residents reported the sound of explosions on social networks.
Under pressure from Ukrainian counter-attacks, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the withdrawal of its forces from the Kharkiv region on Saturday, more than half a year after the start of the war. The official reason for the withdrawal was a strategic “regroupment” of units.
