Daniel Sazonov|According to the police preliminary investigation protocol, Sazonov drove towards the red cars at the intersection of Porkkalankatu and Mechelininkatu.
Helsinki deputy mayor of the city Daniel Sazonov (kok) drove a passenger car towards red lights at high speed during rush hour. This is evident from the brief preliminary investigation prepared by the police.
On September 9, Sazonov himself said in the message service X that he had received fines for driving towards red lights on the same day.
The Helsinki Police Department handed over the document requested by HS on the Sazonov case on Wednesday. It reveals the details of the case.
According to the police preliminary investigation document, Daniel Sazonov had driven a car along Porkkalankatu and turned left onto Mechelininkatu.
In that case, according to the police, he had driven “at a speed too high for the eyes” towards red lights. It was 8:21 a.m. on Monday morning at that time.
“The green light had just changed for the crossing light traffic. The event was on Monday morning during rush hour, there were a lot of pedestrians and cyclists during the event. Visibility when driving to the intersection is poor for light traffic. The act was apt to endanger the safety of light traffic in particular,” the police wrote about the incident.
The police imposed a 12-day fine on Sazonov for endangering traffic safety, which resulted in a total of 1752 euros to be paid.
Sazonov previously wrote in the same vein on social media.
“When I arrived in the city, I drove towards the red lights just after they changed. I received fines from the police for endangering traffic safety, a 12-day fine. I paid them right away. The fines were the first in my entire driving history,” Sazonov wrote.
According to him, at the time of the incident, during rush hour on Monday morning, there were a lot of pedestrians and cyclists in the traffic.
“I don’t want to downplay my actions,” he wrote.
Daniel Sazonov is the coalition’s candidate for the next mayor of Helsinki. Nowadays, he works as a deputy mayor responsible for social and health affairs and rescue operations.
The next municipal elections will be held in the spring of 2025.
