After making history by eliminating a top 5 in the world rankings, the Greek Stephanos Tsitsipas, Daniel Galan continues to make history at the US Open. He is the first Colombian since 1995 to reach the third round of the last grand slam tournament of the year.
Galán had to push himself to the maximum to defeat the Australian Jordan Thompson, number 102 in the ATP world ranking, 6-3, 2-6, 3-6, 6-4 and 6-3, in a marathon of three hours and 52 minutes.
The Colombian, who is not so used to matches of this extension, responded in the last two sets to reach the third round and equal what was achieved in 1995 by Mauricio Hadad.
Daniel Galán’s victory report
“The truth is, I am very happy. It was a difficult game from the beginning. He didn’t give you much time and kept you neutralized for a long time,” Galán explained to ESPN at the end of the match.
“From the first set I was down all the time, I tried to fight as hard as I could and managed to get the match ahead”, added the 26-year-old from Santander, who equals his best performance in a grand slam tournament: he had already reached the third round at Roland Garros, in 2020.
Galán knew how to adapt his game to defeat an opponent who demanded it and put him against the wall in the second and third sets. “Generally I am much more aggressive, but I started to endure a little more, to save my physique. I calmed down, I started to play solid and luckily for me, he started to make mistakes”, said the bumangués.
Daniel Galán’s next match
The Santanderean will face the Spanish Alexander Davidovich, ATP number 39, who beat Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (98th) 7-6 (7), 5-7, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (10).
