All climate studies in recent years on the Mediterranean basin indicate that important changes are occurring in the rainfall regime. The result is that we are witnessing longer dry seasons, especially in the summer, but also more intense and lasting episodes of precipitation, especially in autumn, winter and spring. It is important to remember: these are not new phenomena, but extreme phenomena.
We have known for several years that the temperatures of the Mediterranean Sea are continually exceeding previous records, to the point that “the waters of the Mediterranean basin are warming 20% faster than the rest of the planet.” This high temperature also increases the rate of evaporation and causes much more energy to be stored in the atmosphere, which can be released through torrential rains when the appropriate circumstances occur – when this relatively wetter atmosphere collides with a mass of cold air, what we know as DANA-. The climate system is a complex system, but at this point there is no longer any doubt regarding the link between climate change and the intensity and duration of extreme weather events, such as storms and heavy rain.
