Essential electric mobility. So we could summarize the winning soul of Dacia Spring, the first electric of the Romanian brand that had a strong impact on the EV market to the point of becoming the best-selling electric car in Italy for two consecutive months. The small battery-powered city car was the protagonist of the first Dacia Talks appointment and a short test drive that led us to appreciate its qualities as a true city in the center of Rome.
The Renault group brand has long since begun a very specific path, with the goal of shaking off the low cost label, trying to convey to the automotive world the value for money philosophy that best suits the evolution underway at Dacia. Spring fully represents this trend reversal: price certainly still plays a central role and the numbers they have seen prove it. over 7,000 orders in Italy and 40,000 reservations throughout Europe in a market, that of electric cars, which, although growing, has not yet had the definitive shock. Whether due to the pandemic, or to the semiconductor crisis, EV registrations are growing smoothly and after the exploit of the Fiat 500 it was time for Dacia Spring to take the stage. 1,876 cars sold in September and 1,777 units registered in October represent the litmus test of the Spring phenomenon.
But what are the keystones of this success? According to the price list (it starts from 19,500 euros but with local and regional incentives and contributions you can go below 10,000), Dacia Spring is the result of a pragmatic approach by the Romanian brand that analyzed its customers and the market, highlighting what were the needs. Hence the initially anticipated concept of essentiality and that value for money that returns. No frills or additional elements to use from time to time but a product with everything you really need. So let’s not expect an HD digital dashboard or electric seat adjustment, elements that definitely clash with the Dacia spirit. Spring goes to the point, with adequate space for 4 people and a turning circle of 9.6 meters that make it a very agile city car. Also thanks to the compact size, with the length that measures only 3.73 meters and a light steering to the point of facilitating maneuverability in traffic and in the most confined spaces. On the protagonist version of our Roman test drive, the Confort Plus (top of the range chosen by 90% of customers) there is also the Media Nav 8 ”, perhaps the only Achilles heel of the small Dacia EV: the system is in fact a bit cumbersome and sometimes it crashes. In the top-of-the-range version, the TEP seats, the USB socket and the sensors with rear view camera are also included. From the central tunnel a rotary selector allows you to enter forward or reverse gear while under the display of the infotainment system we find the ECO button that allows you to optimize consumption by sacrificing 10 kW of power and limiting the maximum speed to 100 km / h. Braking turns out to be precise and even to the most decisive and sudden pressures Dacia Spring knows how to respond presently.
L’autonomy in the mixed cycle it is expected to 230 km which become 305 in the WLTP City thanks to the 27.4 kWh battery combined with a 33 kW powertain and 125 Nm of maximum torque. As for charging times, with a 2.3 kW domestic socket it takes less than 14 hours, with a 7.4 kW Wallbox less than 5 hours and finally in DC from 30 kW less than an hour. The pop look combined with the ground light and a few SUV touches make it a city car dressed as an urban crossover with the 3D grille in relief that hides the charging point and the optical signature with DLR LED that accentuate its jaunty character. Dacia Spring is therefore an excellent compromise for those who want to embrace electric mobility one step at a time, with a complete and targeted offer that provides everything you really need.
