The national board of D66 will draw up a resolution on the meaning of ‘new leadership’, the promise with which party leader Sigrid Kaag campaigned. Members have asked for this at the D66 congress.
Earlier this week, the party leadership rejected such a resolution. D66 member Gerda Oskam complained in a motion that there was no discussion with all members within D66 about the interpretation of ‘new leadership’. The party board recognized the ‘necessity of further elaborating the concept of new leadership’, but found a resolution – an extensive party document – too onerous.
This afternoon it appeared that a majority of D66 members supported Oskam’s motion. “The national board will be tasked with working on a resolution on new leadership,” said Aletta Hekker, retiring political secretary of D66, at the digital party congress. ,,That is a very nice challenge for my successor to start with.”
Criticism
Critical members wondered what exactly the ‘new leadership’ of party leader Sigrid Kaag entailed. A number of motions with concrete proposals – for example to abolish parliamentary discipline – were rejected. Member Oskam’s motion passed: it prescribes that the party leadership must in any case address issues such as ‘honesty’, ‘publicity’, ‘verifiability of decisions’ and ‘content over image’.
It’s straightening your back when bad storms arise
Party leader Kaag said in a speech before the congress that leadership is ‘daring to choose, against the tide’. “It is listening to your deepest conviction of what is right and acting on it. It’s your right to be back when bad storms come up. But above all, leadership must be tangible: it is what we leave behind for people when we leave.”
‘hype’
In her speech, Kaag also expressed concerns about ‘hardening and roughening’ in the Netherlands. She spoke of ‘artificial, whipped up contradictions and the aggression that comes with them’. According to her, this aggression is partly caused by politics, which, according to her, is too preoccupied with hypes.
The digital party conference also commemorated the ninetieth birthday of D66 honorary member Jan Terlouw. Not much was said about the course of the formation. Kaag did mention that she and co-negotiator Rob Jetten will have the ‘last finishing touches to put on the agreement.
