Czech Republic Czech President Zeman still in the hospital, the losing prime minister is suspected of running for president

The popular popularity of billionaire Prime Minister Andrej Babiš remains strong despite suspicions of abuse.

Czech the political situation could backfire for months after Saturday’s parliamentary elections if the prime minister, who narrowly lost the election, Andrej Babiš does not acknowledge its loss and seeks a further period.

However, billionaire businessman Babiš’s chances of becoming a government interpreter were significantly weakened on Sunday when his supporters, the president Miloš Zeman, 77, was suddenly hospitalized.

Law according to Zeman should appoint a government interrogator within a month of the election. The president has previously said he will appoint the leader of the party with the most votes for the job.

Based on the election results, the number one prime ministerial candidate would thus be Babiš, the leader of the Ano movement, which received 27.2 percent of the vote.

Professor of Politics Petr Fialan however, the center-right coalition led by the three parties received 27.8 per cent of the votes cast and a majority in both chambers of parliament. The Fiala opposition group could thus overthrow Babiš’s cabinet immediately.

At its longest, this struggle could lead to a months-long twist of power.

Russian-minded President Zeman was rushed to the intensive care unit of a Prague hospital on Sunday immediately after he had met his ally Babish. According to press reports, the president had to be treated for a long-lasting liver disease.

A hospital spokesman said on Monday that the president’s condition has “stabilized”, news channel CNN.

However, no one knows if Zeman will still be able to perform his duties. If he is considered incapacitated, a declaration of incapacity must be adopted by both chambers of Parliament.

The president may still try to challenge the declaration in the Constitutional Court. If the President is also declared incapacitated, the Speaker of the House of Commons will appoint a government interpreter.

No matter how long the game continues, the chances of the populist politician Babiš, who started working as prime minister in 2017, will eventually be slim.

Babish has been suspected of tax evasion and embezzlement of EU money. The so-called Pandora papers, which came to light just before the parliamentary elections, said he secretly transferred EUR 20 million to tax havens and bought a villa on the French Riviera with money.

Party despite the election defeat and suspicions of abuse, Babiš’s personal popularity remains strong. This has already led many observers of Prague politics to believe that Zeman will be left behind by reconciliation and that Babiš will run for president.

Opinion poll experts who previously worked for opposition parties Jakub Horák and Karel Pluhař landed on Monday on a news site To Novinkythat Babiš would get to the second round on the basis of current support figures, with supporters from the left and nationalist fragmented parties resolving.

In the second round, Babiš would probably face the senator and chemist of the Academy of Sciences, who had narrowly lost to Zeman in the previous election. Jiří Drahošin.

“The sooner the presidential election is held, the greater the chances of Andrej Babiš,” Karel Pluhař estimates.
