Zeman, 77, had previously received Prime Minister Andrej Babis for an interview following the election result. In the parliamentary elections on Friday and Saturday, Babis’ populist center party ANO remained the largest party with 27 percent of the vote, but that is probably not enough to rule further. After all, the liberal-conservative opposition won a clear majority of 108 of the 200 seats in the House of Representatives.
The president plays a vital role in the Czech Republic after the elections as he gives the order to form a government. If the Head of State is unable to attend, this task is transferred to the Speaker of the Parliament.
Zeman stayed in hospital for eight days in September, after which he regained his strength in a clinic. He has been president since 2013, which is rather a ceremonial position in the Czech Republic. Before that, he was Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from 1998 to 2002.
Zeman suffers from diabetes and is dependent on a wheelchair due to a nervous disease. He is the first Czech president to be directly elected twice by the people, after a constitutional amendment made this possible. No details have been released about Zeman’s current condition.
