The Dutch runner had a serious accident last December.

According to the same source, the former champion of Netherlands road cyclist is not yet able to speak, but is beginning to make sounds.

Hard reality

“Sometimes we suddenly hear a little word come out clearly from her mouth. She doesn’t repeat it but it’s nice to hear her voice again.”

Pieters, 31, was the victim of a serious accident in December during training with the Dutch track cycling team in the Spanish town of Calp.

The runner suffered loss of consciousness as a result of a severe brain injury. After several operations and several months in a coma, his SD Worx team announced in late April that he had regained consciousness.

Since August, he has been in charge of the Woerden rehabilitation center in the Netherlands.
