Cycling | This is the real price of Meilahti’s damaged bicycle bridge

The price of the bicycle bridge that excites the workers is significantly lower than what has been given to understand in public speeches.

In Meilahten the bike bridge would actually cost about five million euros.

The estimated construction costs of the bridge are 4.9 million euros, according to the documents of the Urban Environment Board.

The entire portion of Humallahde, including street works, would cost 6.4 million euros, of which the bridge itself would take the lion’s share.

Bridge has attracted a lot of opposition and one point that the opponents have drawn attention to is the cost of the bridge.

The public has repeatedly discussed the total price of Baana, which is approximately slightly less than 13 million euros.

13 million, however, includes the entire track: a new bike lane about five kilometers long from Turunväylä to Etu-Töölö. Another bridge would be built on the route: in Meilahti at the Munkkiniemi end of Paciuskenkatu, to make more room for cycling.

Humallahti rocks seen from the opposite shore. The bicycle bridge would be in front of the rocks.

For the hell of it the bicycle bridge is justified by the fact that it allowed cyclists to pass two hills: a long hill in one direction, a steep hill in the other.

One alternative has been proposed to smooth out the steep hill rising from Seurasaarentie to Paciuskenkatu, which would cost less: just over a million euros. However, it would not solve the hill problem when traveling in the other direction.

The city’s principle when planning cycling routes, or lanes, is that they should be as flat as possible and there should be as few meters of ascent as possible or the ascents should be gentle.

The bicycle bridge, on the other hand, has been opposed because it is perceived to spoil the beautiful cliffs, the rocky beach and the view of the sea.
