The police in Curaçao announced on Tuesday evening (local time) that they had “with disappointment and disapproval” seen the documentary that Ewout Genemans made for RTL 5 about ‘the dark side of Curaçao’. The broadcast was broadcast on Monday evening and contains various images of police actions.
According to the Curaçao police, the documentary was made under other pretexts and Genemans promised to show the documentary to the police before broadcasting. According to her, that did not happen. It is currently being investigated whether legal action can be taken against the program maker, according to the police.
In May this year there was already a commotion on the island when local press was kept away during a raid by the police. According to the police, at that time the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee had hired people to make a documentary about the fight against crime. That turned out to be Genemans afterwards.
The fact that local photographers and cameramen were kept away so that he could take pictures caused a lot of discontent among the Curaçao press. The police later explained that this was done because of a documentary commissioned by the military police.
The police now say that she was ambushed by Genemans’ broadcast. In turn, he claims to have made the documentary to pay attention to the “dark and criminal sides of the island”, which, according to him, is seen as a paradise by many Dutch tourists.
