In Limone the reopening of the plants is set for November 27 but the railway line will not yet be operational
Ventimiglia – No delay on the part of Rfi and Sncf Réseau in the reconstruction of the embankment on the last section, the one between Breil and Ventimiglia, still out of use on the Cuneo-Ventimiglia railway. But the line will not be operational anytime soon for the reopening of the facilities on the White Reserve.
The date “x” for skiers is currently set for on November 27, after two seasons marred by the pandemic and the storm in Val Roia and Vermenagna which swept away all land connections between the Riviera and the Cuneo area. In any case, that communicated by the railways is good news. “RFI, with the companies in charge, is positioning the last layers of material – explains RFI – compacting each layer to separate the base of the railway plane from the embankment we are building”. The reference goes to construction site in French territory, between Breil and the border (the site is based in Olivetta San Michele), where RFI was mandated by the Intergovernmental Conference of the Southern Alps, at the request of the French (and on the basis of the future cost sharing scheme), to repair the embankment and slope that collapsed in the French territory south of the Breil railway junction.
«These operations – says RFI – which constituted the most demanding phase, will end at the beginning of next week. The nets will then be laid for cortical strengthening and the implementation of the nailing ». No delay for the passing of the baton to the transalpine railways who will have to retool the line. «At the same time – continues RFI – again from next week, Sncf will start the reconstruction activities of the track (sleepers, crushed stone and rails) provided for by the agreement itself. All in line with the time limits set by the agreement which envisage the reopening of the line section in the second half of December ».
In terms of tourism and beyond, the Piedmont Region (to whom the line is managed) had announced the request to Trenitalia to add to the two pairs of daily connections in every sense, with unsuitable timetable for the skiers of the Riviera since the first train for Piedmont leaves in mid-morning and now only from Ventimiglia, at least of the railway shuttles between Tenda (or Vievola) to reach Limone. But the time for confirmation has not yet come.
The “railway of wonders” or Cuneo-Ventimiglia-Nice, broke the ground last year first prize of 50,000 by winning the national ranking of “Places of the heart”. But in the absence of a new bilateral agreement that guarantees the relaunch of the cross-border line – the one between Breil and Nice is an entirely French branch, albeit prestigious – to date even the Ligurian and Piedmontese committees that had supported the candidacy for the FAI competition have not still unveiled how the prize will be used.
