In the hinterland of the Caribbean island, 22-year-old Castellanos rightfully puts his shoulders to the wheel. The young powerhouse claims to have made the Guinness World Record Book last week by towing a car through his village with his unusually protruding and flexible shoulder blades.
Christian pulled the 1,100-pound colossus, attached to a piece of wood between his shoulders, for a distance of 25 meters down the main street of Sancti Spiritus. A year earlier, he stunned the world by crushing 82 beer cans in under a minute. An improvement on a previous world record that stood at 68.
He has not yet confirmed his record. Two previous attempts to break the record were rejected by Guinness on technical grounds. For example, Castellanos forgot to mention the size of the cans used. Still, the ‘winged’ Cuban has high hopes for stardom.
“My dream is to transcend Cuba and become world famous,” he says. A TV show like I’ve got talent seems to him the appropriate way to achieve his goal. His trainer, the only 17-year-old Mario Cesar Quesada, is confident that his pupil, whom he has known since primary school, will succeed.
,,People are amazed”, Quesada says. ,,It’s not a talent like jumping, hitting a ball or running. It’s a strange talent, he’s a powerhouse. He crushes cans and pulls vehicles.” Local journalist Felix Suarez, who is a witness at the record attempts, also sees a bright future for Christian.
,,He wants to break all records that depend on the strength and flexibility of his shoulder blades,” he explains. Something that, given his perseverance and physical idiosyncrasy, he will certainly succeed. To this end, the Cuban trains with weights, crushes crackers and breaks CDs in half.
For now, only the current world record holders of cars and can crushers – the Indian Abhishek Choubey and the American Fabrizio Milito – have to fear for their place in the thick world record book. ,,I know there are more people showing off their shoulders,” Castellanos says. “But I was born for a Guinness record.”
