Mexico City.- The number of Cuban doctors hired by the Mexican government has tripled in the last two years.
IMSS director Zoé Robledo reported that the number of specialists increased from 966, an initial agreement with the Miguel Díaz-Canel Administration, to 3,101 doctors, as of this month of September.
During the morning press conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on the last “Health Tuesday” of the six-year term, the official detailed that the doctors of 35 different specialties sent by the Island were assigned to IMSS-Bienestar clinics in 24 states and a total of 329 municipalities. “The agreement was made with the Government of Cuba, with the Cuban medical services, an organization that has been working in different countries of the world for more than 20 years. On July 22, 2022, a first agreement was started and later we were also there with President Díaz-Canel to sign a second agreement,” he explained.
“With these, we went from 869 Cuban specialist doctors to a total of 3,101 doctors who are already working in 23 states where IMSS-Bienestar is present,” he said, mentioning a different figure from the one in the table in his presentation.
Robledo emphasized that brigades have arrived with internists, pediatricians, surgeons, emergency physicians, gynecologists, anesthesiologists, but also ophthalmologists, nephrologists, geriatricians, rheumatologists, psychiatrists, cardiologists, oncologists and otorhinolaryngologists.
