Before the critical moment of the pandemic of covid-19 that goes through Cuba joined to the economic blockade of United States, Russia shipping this Saturday two planes with humanitarian aid, including one million face masks.
By order of the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, “two An-124 aircraft of the Ministry of Defense took off from the Chkalovski airfield, near Moscow, bound for Cuba, “a historic ally, the ministry declared in a statement.
“The planes will deliver food, personal protective equipment and more than a million medical masks to Cuba. In total, more than 88 tons [de ayuda humanitaria]”, he specified.
The island of 11 million people is experiencing a worrying increase in the number of infections and deaths from covid-19. Since the start of the pandemic, it has registered 316,383 cases and 2,020 deaths, according to official figures on Friday.
Added to this situation are the economic difficulties caused by the United States embargo.
On Thursday, Washington also imposed financial sanctions, mostly symbolic, on the Cuban Defense Minister, Álvaro López Miera.
United States approved those sanctions for the “repression” of recent “protests peaceful and pro-democracy “in Cuba and threatened the island’s communist authorities with new punitive measures.
On July 11, the cries of “We are hungry!” and “Down with the dictatorship!” they accompanied the demonstrations in Cuba, which continued sporadically the next day.
At the end of these protests, which caused one death and dozens of injuries, some 100 people were arrested, according to various opposition organizations.
