Crown tests When should a child be taken for a corona test and when is patient care at home sufficient? This is how THL instructs children in corona tests

At the beginning of the autumn holidays, the instructions of the Department of Health and Welfare on corona testing of children will be repeated again in families with children.

Schools during the fall holiday week, many families with children have plans for travel and relocation.

However, the plans can go new if the noses of the youngest in the family in particular get wet again. Will the grandmother’s trip succeed or is there a trip to the crown test that has become familiar to families with children again in a year and a half?

Children under the age of 12 are not vaccinated in Finland.

At the end of September, the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) updated its recommendations on coronavirus testing in children. THL: n recommendations according to the flu symptoms alone, children under the age of 12 no longer need to be automatically taken for a corona test.

THL: n according to under 12 years of age should be taken for a coronary test if the child has symptoms and is known to have been exposed to the coronavirus in the previous two weeks.

A symptomatic child should also be tested if there are unvaccinated individuals 16 years of age or older or immunocompromised in the family.

If the child is very ill, the doctor treating the child may also consider that a corona test should be performed on the child.

“At our house there are a lot of children who have been stitched dozens of times in the past year and a half. Now we need to focus testing on those children who are at high risk, ”says the chief physician of the Infection Unit at Tampere University Hospital Jaana Syrjänen.

For example, in Pirkanmaa, the hospital district instructions however, it is noted that even children who do not necessarily need a corona test can be tested if parents wish.

“If parents really want a test, we won’t stop it,” Syrjänen says.

THL: n unvaccinated and symptomatic over 12 years of age should always be tested if they have symptoms consistent with a coronavirus infection.

Although a child under the age of 12 no longer needs to be automatically taken for a corona test, a symptomatic child should not go to kindergarten or school. This is also true during autumn leave: a symptomatic child must avoid contact outside the family.

“If a child has the flu, he gets the flu at home and doesn’t go to playgrounds or anywhere else to expose others,” Syrjänen says.

According to the THL, a child can return to early childhood education or school when he or she is clearly recovering, even if the symptoms have not yet completely subsided. In all viral infections, including corona, the most contagious days are in the early stages of the disease.

The same instructions apply to autumn holidays.

“It’s not quite caught up in the wind, when it has traditionally been said that you have to be at home for at least three days from the flu,” says Syrjänen.

On autumn vacation many families with children also meet with grandparents.

Jaana Syrjänen reminds that symptomatic appointments must be missed. Otherwise, children and grandparents can meet each other, especially since the grown-up population has been vaccinated twice. Many children over the age of 12 have already received two doses of the vaccine.

Two doses of the vaccine protect against a very serious disease.

“If there are twice-vaccinated grandparents and a child under the age of 12, I think it is quite unreasonable not to be able to go to see you, even though there is now more virus in Finland than there has been some time ago,” says Syrjänen.

“But of course a sick child should not be taken to see an elderly grandparent, but only when they are healthy. Common sense must be used. ”
