Tens of thousands of people, led by indigenous groups, demanded “climate justice” amid COP26 in Glasgow on Saturday (6), as the UN summit enters its final stretch in search of a pact to prevent temperatures from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of this century.
Under heavy rain and a wind that gradually subsided during the day, up to 100,000 people took part in the march. The numbers are from the organizers of the Global Climate Justice Day, but have not been confirmed by police. The protest started at Kelvingrove Park at 12:00 (local, 9:00 GMT), near the COP26 headquarters, and passed through Glasgow to finish at Glasgow Green Park.
Amid bagpipes, trumpets and drumming, but also umbrellas and sanitary masks, the march took place in a festive atmosphere, with messages against capitalism, meat consumption, nuclear energy and in favor of political refugees. Organizers also wanted to give indigenous peoples a central place as a global symbol of climate activism.
“Certainly the dinosaurs also thought they had time”, “No more apologies”, “We can’t drink money”, “There is no planet B” and “Save our future” are some of the phrases seen on posters during the mobilization. The COP26 negotiations will be concluded next Friday.
