Muscles and tendons do not have time to intervene to remedy the malposition of the foot on the ground.
Who has never taken a wrong turn in life? It is enough to put a foot in the wrong on uneven ground or go down a step badly that the ankle is at the expense. Not only, sprained ankle is also one of the most frequent injuries in sports, for example in those who play basketball or football. Often mild trauma and it resolves in a short time with a bandage and keeping the joint at rest. In other cases, recovery times are greater and plays a fundamental role proprioceptive rehabilitation gymnastics, which aims to stimulate the neuro-motor system as a whole and re-educate reflexes.
What happens if you take a retort?
The distortion abnormal movement of the joint causing excessive traction of the capsule and ligaments of the ankle. The consequence goes from the stretching of a ligament to the partial or complete rupture of one or more ligaments. In some cases the trauma can be such that it results in one fracture of the bony part of the ankle or foot. Fractures of the malleolus can, for example, occur in the presence of osteoporosis, even after minimal trauma – he explains Angelo Chessa, Head of Foot Surgery at the San Paolo Hospital in Milan -. Under normal conditions
the proprioceptive system (the sophisticated mechanism that serves for the perception of information from the external environment) tends to protect the joint, providing impulses mediated by the nervous system about where the foot is positioned relative to the ground. If there is no match, as happens when you take a retort, proprioception fails to activate the feedback mechanism on the muscles and tendons for which there is abnormal movement of the joint with possible lesions of the capsule-ligament structure.
What are the consequences?
In most cases, the distortion is mild and determines an excessive extension of the ligaments (stretching) which do not break. The stretching causes acute pain which may be followed by a slight swelling and the formation of a bruise due to the rupture of the small capsular vessels, while the functionality of the joint is not compromised and the individual is still able to walk. If the trauma is major, one or more ligaments may be affected whose partial or total rupture determines gradually more disabling symptoms. The joint is painful, swollen, red and the hematoma expands. The walk becomes painful and, in the most serious cases, it is not possible to move the joint and load it.
How should one behave?
The first trick apply the RICE method (acronym for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) that is, rest, ice, compression bandaging, and limb elevation. To relieve pain you can also take painkillers or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. If the trauma is more severe than it initially seemed, it is usually spontaneous to go to the emergency room, where it is routinely performed ankle x-ray to rule out any fractures, which are generally rare anyway. In minor injuries ankle bandage is sufficient, but if the trauma is more severe after a few days this may be replaced by an orthopedic brace capable of blocking inward and outward movements of the joint. Once the acute phase has passed, it is very important that it be followed a proprioceptive rehabilitation program, while surgery it is taken into consideration only in those cases in which an ankle instability persists after the physiotherapy program.
