The employers assure that the decision of Minister Teresa Ribera is “a new episode of a way of doing politics that the regional business fabric flatly rejects and that has little to do with safeguarding general interests”
The Regional Confederation of Business Organizations of the Region of Murcia (Croem) assured this Wednesday that “the latest decision of the Government of Spain, at the initiative of the Minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, to continue reducing the contributions of the Tajo-Segura Transfer It is a new attack for the Spanish Levante and in particular for the Region of Murcia, which has in said infrastructure one of the reasons for its social and economic growth.
The employers emphasize that “the Government has ignored the opinion of the Council of State to once again cut the delivery of water and thus ignore the clamor of the thousands of businessmen and workers in the agri-food sector of Alicante, the Region of Murcia and Almería. The fact that the Mediterranean communities concentrate most of Spain’s GDP and population, as well as being the pantry of the European continent, are not sufficient reasons, it seems, to listen to proportionate and legally and technically justified demands that have with the objective of protecting the true lever of the economy of these areas”.
For Croem, it is “a new episode of a way of doing politics that the regional business fabric flatly rejects and that has little to do with safeguarding general interests. Without taking into account what this will mean not only for the affected territories but for the whole of Spain, the decision of the central government is a reflection of the irrational sectarianism that dominates the political landscape and that has reached the institutions in its worst possible version.
«To say that the water from the Transfer will be supplied with an increase in desalination demonstrates a deep ignorance of the reality that the Segura basin lives and the needs of irrigation. Neither the quality of the desalinated water nor the price paid for it will allow the survival of many crops », he indicates.
The employers added in a statement that “neither this Executive nor any other with government responsibilities in Spain in the last thirty years has had the courage to propose real solutions to the water problems of this country, whose solution involves planning with a vision of State in which respect for the principles of balance and solidarity between territories prevails. Our rulers must ensure the general interest and work applying common criteria that affect all regions equally and not with favoritism, squandering those who are not politically related and turning their backs on citizens and economic activity.
Croem concludes that “it will continue to defend the interests of farmers, irrigators and the agri-food industry as a whole, as well as all sectors of activity directly and indirectly related to its future, since they generate thousands of jobs on which thousands of families in the southeast of Spain. This confederation will act as the spearhead of any demand, mobilization and initiative that is taken to protect their interests.
