The fiction, the first that Disney+ develops in Spain, is a production designed to show off the artist and, to a lesser extent, her real-life partner, Miguel Bernardeau
The singer Aitana and the actor Miguel Bernardeau say that ‘La última’ arose almost as a joke. Joaquim Oristrell, the fiction scriptwriter, had lunch with the couple and suggested the possibility of doing something together at a time when the two tried to keep their private lives out of everything, since they had the press behind them almost every day. “We laughed a lot,” Bernardeau acknowledged during the massive press conference in which fiction was released. But when they got home, they began to think about it. «In the end – summed up the actor who gave life to the funny Guzmán in ‘Elite’ – it was a project in which we could develop some interesting characters, in a story that was worth telling. Of course we have tried to do it with honest acting work. It is about people wanting to see the series not only because Aitana is there, but because the story is worth it.
That project, the first that Disney+ develops in our country, has already landed on the platform, with its five chapters at once, and far from what Bernardeau said, it does have one goal in mind: to please Aitana’s followers. After all, the singer who rose to stardom after her participation in the 2017 edition of ‘Operación triunfo’, embodies Candela, an artist who is making a name for herself on the internet through the songs she sings. with her friend. For his part, Bernardeau gives life to Diego, a guy who makes a living teaching boxing to children and fighting in clandestine matches. Both have known each other since high school, but had never noticed each other. One day Diego must flee from one of these illegal fights after noticing the presence of the police in the vicinity. Bloodied, he enters a joint where he stands mesmerized by Candela. The young woman performs a song on stage, hoping that one of the most important producers in the industry will notice her, but the executive doesn’t stop talking on his cell phone. Diego, absorbed by what he is hearing, asks him to leave “the fucking phone.” The producer leaves angrily, but before leaving the room he realizes that Candela is a diamond in the rough and hires her.
From there, what follows is a story full of clichés, old and outdated, made to show off Aitana and, to a lesser extent, Miguel Bernardeau, who has been able to include his real passion for boxing in the plot. And yes, it can be said that the complicity of Bernardeau and Aitana does go beyond fiction in a certain way, although their acting skills are not the best. The sweet and intelligent girl and the rude and stubborn boy fall in love just when they are both trying to achieve their dreams – to be a successful singer; become the Spanish boxing champion- on a journey that ends up becoming an obstacle course. A good part of them are placed by the two fictional villains: the producer Fede, played by Aitor Luna, who will not hesitate to subject Candela to strict control to protect his investment. And Madison, a shady guy who puts a face on Luis Zahera. Immersed in all kinds of fraudulent businesses and clandestine combat, Madison works on the basis of blackmail and extortion, using people like Diego to fill her coffers. Her interpretation, a caricature taken to the extreme of what Zahera is used to doing -she has become the very bad villain of all Spanish productions-, is also one of the funniest and most likeable of all fiction.
Disappointments, joys, falls and triumphs forge this kind of ‘La La Land’ from Cañí that addresses issues such as the fragility of friendship and love when success is around, the lack of understanding of parents in the face of their children’s choices -the relationship between Candela and her mother is especially ridiculous-, the professional jealousy, the personal sacrifices or the difficulties of getting out of the hole when life doesn’t make it easy. Aitana’s fans will enjoy, and a lot, the songs performed by the singer from San Clemente de Llobregat, and especially the last chapter that takes place at the WiZink Center in Madrid, with a great staging. Not surprisingly, an album has been published with the eight songs that are heard in the series. On the other hand, it is surprising how bad the sound mix is in many of the sequences, where the ambient music does not allow the dialogue to be heard clearly.
It has not been confirmed yet, but the end of the first season is left so open and with such a hasty closure that we are convinced that there will be a second season, if it has not already been shot.
