Argentina's highest criminal court rejected an appeal by former president Cristina Kirchner (2007-2015) against a decision that had revoked the closing of a case in which she is being investigated for her alleged collaboration in the crime of money laundering.
The Federal Chamber of Criminal Cassation did not accept the complaint presented by Kirchner's defense in the case known as “Money Route K”, which is why it confirmed the revocation of the filing that the National Chamber of Appeals in Federal Criminal and Correctional Matters had decided on 28 November, according to a decision issued this Monday (5).
The case, which began in April 2013, investigates the former vice president (2019-2023) for alleged money laundering maneuvers through public works businessman Lázaro Báez, already convicted and with whom Cristina and the now deceased president Néstor Kirchner (2003-2007) had a close relationship.
Cristina was favored with the filing on June 5, 2023 based on a decision by the case's prosecutor, Guillermo Marijuan, the same person who accused her in 2016.
However, the non-governmental organization Bases Republicanas – close to Proposta Republicana, the party of former president Mauricio Macri (2015-2019) – presented itself as a plaintiff in the case and demanded the reinstatement of the then vice-president.
Bases Republicanas managed to reopen the case on November 28, when the Federal Chamber revoked the filing of the charges against Cristina, and the case was returned to judge Sebastián Casanello.
Cristina then filed an appeal against the revocation of the filing, which was finally rejected this Monday, which is why the case will remain in Casanello's hands.
This is one of the cases that still involves Cristina, who on December 6, 2022, was sentenced to six years in prison and perpetual disqualification from holding public office after being found guilty of fraudulent administration of funds in the concession of public works.
This sentence is not yet definitive, as it was also the subject of an appeal by the former president.
Cristina lost her privileged jurisdiction when she left the position of vice president on December 10, 2023. However, her 70th birthday in February 2023 would allow her to request the benefit of house arrest. (With EFE Agency)
