Tony Fadellknown as the inventor of the iPod and co-inventor of the iPhone, is now focusing his efforts from technology to safeguarding the planet. His new project? Convert methane emitted by cows into diamonds.
During the Starmus Festival in Bratislava, an event that combines science and art, Fadell explained how he intends transform methane of bovine belching and flatulence in diamonds. This festival is co-founded by Queen guitarist Brian May and provides an ideal platform to discuss groundbreaking innovations.
After selling his company Nest to Google for £2.5 billion in 2014, Fadell decided to invest some of these funds in the fight against climate change. This year he financed and designed it MethaneSATa satellite capable of detecting methane leaks.
Cow burps to found Diamond Foundry
Cows, as we know, are one significant source of methane emissions, a gas that traps much more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. For this reason, Fadell founded Diamond Foundry, a company that uses methane of animal origin or extracted from the ground to produce diamonds using renewable energies such as wind and sun. However, these diamonds are predominantly used in electronic sector.
Another innovative project by Fadell is CH4 Global, which develops red algae to integrate into livestock feed to reduce methane emissions from livestock by 80-90%. Although methane does not persist in the atmosphere as long as the CO2is 80 times more harmful in the first 20 years after its release.
These developments represent significant steps in the fight against climate change and demonstrate how technological innovation can address some of our planet’s most pressing challenges.
