Residents of Sydney, Australia are celebrating the end of the lockdown, imposed 107 days ago to contain the spread of the coronavirus and now relieved for people who have completed their vaccination course. Since midnight, the pubs and shops that have opened for the occasion have registered long lines of people who flocked. Many others have traveled to the homes of relatives and friends to reunite after nearly four months of limitations. The rules introduced by local authorities to limit the spread of Covid-19 had in fact prohibited visits to families and travel beyond 5 kilometers from their residence.
In addition to sharing meals in the reopened bars and restaurants, residents of Sydeny can now head to the gym, library and swimming pool. Long queues this morning to go to the barbers and beauty salons. Australia’s largest city was cleared from lockdown after the state of New South Wales double-vaccinated 70% of over 16s. Further restrictions will be relaxed when 80% of over 16s are fully vaccinated. Currently, over 90 percent of the population has received a first dose.
