Covid, the civil proceedings against Lombardy and the Government requested by the relatives of the victims are underway
The civil proceedings started in Rome by 500 families who have sued the Lombardy Region, the Ministry of Health and the Presidency of the Council for having lost their loved ones in the province of Bergamo due to Covid-19 in a contagion which, according to the accusation, it could have been avoided.
As documented exclusively by TPI, the province of Bergamo in a few hours became the hospital of Italy in March 2020 due to the decision not to establish a red zone similar to the one that the health authorities – regional and state – had established in Codogno after the first cases of Coronavirus exploded in Italy. Decision taken despite the ISS had recommended to the CTS the closure of the provinces of Alzano and Nembro, where the spread of the virus had already become worrying on 2 March, following the cases registered at the Pesenti Fernaroli Hospital in Alzano Lombardo.
But the indictment also refers to the government’s failure to update the pandemic plan and the substantial unpreparedness of the health authorities in the face of an emergency which, with due care, could have been partially prevented. On the occasion of the start of the trial, some family members organized a sit-in in front of the Court of Rome, which was attended by about 40 people from Lombardy. “My father’s body was in army trucks – a relative told the Everyday occurrence – you can’t even imagine what pain we felt ”.
From the proceedings, the relatives of the victims hope to obtain justice and compensation of approx 100 million euros. The families of the victims of Bergamo are convinced that they have paid for “the misdeeds of politics” and that for this reason it is now politics that must pay. The trial will run parallel to the criminal trial that is taking place in Bergamo.
