Pharmaceutical companies have seized the opportunities linked to the increased demand for anti-Covid health products
In 2020, the turnover of companies in the high-tech sectors showed a decline of 2.3% (median values), with a share of subjects growing by 45%, showing less negative results than those observed for the economic system as a whole. This is what emerges from the High-tech Sectors Monitor created by Intesa Sanpaolo.
This edition of the Monitor analyzes the economic-financial results of 12,765 companies specialized in high-tech sectors (aerospace, ICT, pharmaceutical, biomedical, TLC) in the two-year period 2019-2020, focusing attention on the evolution of turnover, and on some profitability, financial and equity indicators.
Also in in terms of margins and income indicators, the slowdown was less intense than expected. The specialization in sectors that have been less affected by the collapse in demand and closures has made it possible to record a more contained decline in turnover compared to the Italian panorama.
There performance of the high-tech sectors, however, reflects a high dispersion of results by production specialization: the good results of pharmaceuticals, ICT services and TLCs are contrasted by negative data from biomedical, trade and above all aerospace. The spread is high, however, also within the same sector.
The pharmaceutical companies have seized the opportunities linked to the increased demand for health products anti-Covid (also inserting itself in the vaccine production chain), counterbalancing the lower demand for all those types of goods that are not necessary in countering the health emergency. In the biomedical sector, on the other hand, there is an increase in the demand for medical aids (medical devices) to combat the pandemic did not counterbalance the collapse in demand for all other types of products. However, there are exceptions, as in the case of the biomedical center of Mirandola.
In ICT, on the one hand, the digitization processes imposed by the pandemic have accelerated the demand for some types of computer hardware and essential communications to meet the new needs of work from home and distance learning, but the demand for other types of goods, related to the organization of events, office equipment, etc. has dropped.
In Tlc, the growing demand for connectivity has supported the performance of operators in infrastructures and / or virtual networks, while growing competitive pressure is impacting the performance of the main telephone operators. However, the aerospace sector is suffering the most dramatic consequences of the pandemic, suffering from the collapse of air traffic.
