Eastern Europe is the area most affected by the increase in new cases. A surge in infections in Germany, a difficult situation in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Austria. Between lockdowns and restrictions, we run for cover in view of winter
In first place is the Czech Republic, then Poland and Hungary. Here the new cases per million have increased by more than 90% compared to the data of the beginning of October. Among the top ten states for the increase in the number of infections compared to last month, five are in Eastern Europe, according to data from the portal Our World in Data. The area of the Union where the vaccination rate is lowest.
In the Czech Republic the population that has completed the vaccination cycle stops at 63%, in Poland the percentage is lower by ten points. In Hungary, which also administers the Russian Sputnik vaccine against the indications of the European drug agency, the administration rate is steady at 58%.
Holland
It is the Central European state with the most significant increase in infections: 91%. Data that motivated the introduction of a new lockdown, the first on the continent for months now. Bars and restaurants will close by 8pm, non-essential activities as early as 6pm. But there are no restrictions on schools and universities. In the Netherlands, the CoronaCheck requirement (the local version of the Green Pass) does not concern work, but remains necessary for access to cafes, restaurants, nightclubs and indoor events. From the beginning of November, the mask is again mandatory in public places. The percentage of vaccinated people is lower than the Italian one: about 70%. The Netherlands has been included by Ecdc, the European center for disease control, in the list of EU nations in which the contagion is of “high concern”.
Denmark
New Covid cases grew 89% compared to the beginning of October. In September, Denmark eased all coronavirus measures. Now the government has reintroduced the “coronapas” (the Green Pass in force in the country) for a month as a measure to limit the increase in infections. It must be used by all citizens over fifteen, even for going to work.
In August, the Danish health minister, Magnus Heunicke, called the epidemic “under control”. So far the use of the mask has only been recommended, the social distancing abolished and the green certification not mandatory for entry into the premises.
Austria and Germany
The two Central European nations are experiencing an increase in infections of over 84%.
Austria continues to be the Central European country with the lowest percentage of vaccinated: 63%. A figure comparable with its Eastern European neighbors.
Austria has decided to isolate the non-immunized, limiting their non-essential activities. The Land of Upper Austria and Salzburg will start on November 15th. Those who are not vaccinated will be able to go out only for necessities such as shopping, work and physical activity.
In absolute numbers, Germany reached its peak of new infections this month, with around 50,000 daily infections recorded in mid-November. Lothar Wieler, president of the Robert Koch Institut, declared that “The fourth wave hits us with all its force.” Without additional measures, the situation is likely to worsen in all German lands. “Reduce your contacts”, exhorted the expert, highlighting how, in some regions, the rule of access reserved for vaccinated and recovered people is no longer sufficient.
Italy
In the latest survey, Ecdc included Italy in low-risk countries, together with Malta, Spain and Sweden. Despite still reassuring indicators of intensive care and deaths, new infections per million in the country increased by 70% compared to the first week of October. A figure close to that of France and Portugal, which have vaccination rates similar to that of Italy. The situation in Ireland is more worrying. Where, despite the significant percentage of immunized, new cases have increased by 78% compared to last month.
Out of the Union
The situation is not improving. On November 13, 1241 deaths were recorded in Russia, the highest figure recorded by the Federation. Less than a third of the population are vaccinated. The deaths since the beginning of the pandemic are 248,000, according to data from John Hopkins University.
