Concerned about the advance of the Delta variant in the city, the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes (PSD), said this Friday morning, 20, that he may resume more restrictive measures if the numbers of serious cases and deaths from covid-19 increase. The capital of Rio de Janeiro registered an increase in the number of people infected with the disease for the second week in a row.
“We have to realize that things are hot in Rio, especially in Rio (capital). This new variant started in the city of Rio. We cannot allow cases to get worse and end up in deaths”, he said in the presentation of the epidemiological bulletin. “Our appeal to Cariocas: if there is an increase in aggravations, we can go back to taking new restrictive measures.”
Delta is singled out as an even more contagious variant by recent studies. Although the increase in cases has not yet turned into an increase in the number of deaths, the high level of infection worries authorities.
Rio is concluding this week the application of the first dose of vaccines in adults and starts next week to vaccinate teenagers. On Monday, the 23rd, the city must make an announcement about the third dose for the elderly and, perhaps, about the anticipation of the second dose of Pfizer – which is considered more difficult.
Like the government of São Paulo, Paes stated that he will enter the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to guarantee the sending of vaccine shipments by the Ministry of Health. Last month, the mayor and the municipal secretary of Health, Daniel Soranz , complained more than once about delays in shipping, which came to paralyze the Rio calendar.
